My top photographs 2017.

I’m so grateful to all my clients this year.  You’re what allow me to have the job I love.

Keep doing it!

I hope to see you all again in 2018.

Women’s March 2017 was  more than a single issue protest. Shocked by an extremist right-wing take over of the US government, marchers lamented over a myriad of anti Trump issues.

Backing the Niobrara was the first of three cover stories done for O&G Investor magazine in 2017. I posted my own story and what it’s like to be an energy photographer in Industrial Photography (March 2017)

Although this picture is nothing special, the circumstances were. “Chicken” a rare Sicilian Buttercup, began nesting in my yard last January. We fed her and she stayed until summer giving us a daily oval gift.

Executive portraits for an unusual business were featured in this story from March 2017: Denver Reefer Bankers

In 2017 was a great year for executive portrait photography –– too many executive portraits to show here.

But I love telling stories in pictures. And some of my top photographs 2017 collection has images that do just that –– tell a story. I did it in steel-toed boots and I did it in a suit jacket (no tie though).

Oil roughneck in Texas heat. Under current political polarization, I find American Industrialism in the 21st century a particularly interesting series.

I always thought photo editors have a rough job. Their decisions make history. Compiling a set of top photographs 2017 should be a simple task. But to choose which pictures to keep and which ones to toss was a little daunting. Maybe that’s why I skipped 16.

I think about the famous pictures in history and I wonder about the frame just before or one just after. Sometimes, months or even years after a photoshoot, I go back to look at the original negatives or raw files. And occasionally I find a gem that was missed before. Now why didn’t I see that in the first place? Photographs do last forever and when we choose a particular image over another we are essentially writing history.

When Annie McKinnon told me her sister (a Catholic priest) was going to baptize 8 kids in the Blue River near Breckenridge, images of a wild John the baptist dousing heads into frigid water came to mind. It wasn’t quite that dramatic yet it was a beautiful event to cover.

Actor Dancer Photography for Camilla Susser was one of the big highlights of the year. Not only was the photoshoot a blast, we got some fantastic images.

In 2017, dozens of business clients commissioned me for executive group shots. At left is the board of The Gates Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Biology. And the group on the right is of the partners of Denver’s oldest law firm, Sherman and Howard done for 5280 magazine.

Good things or bad come in bunches, it seems. Some years are filled with sadness others with joy. For me, the only word that fits 2017 is bizarre. Of course, the presidential inauguration of a former TY reality series star was foretelling.

Now imagine a boot hook flying off a while lacing. And imagine the projectile sneaking in under eyeglasses to strike an eye with such force that it creates a cataract. Yeah, the odds against that happening are pretty huge.

It’s funny: When a calamity almost occurs, we say “whew, that was a close call”. And yet when something nasty happens we call it a “freak accident”.

Having your car unexpectedly bolt into oncoming traffic at 80 MPH unexpectedly, getting stood up (repeatedly), getting swindled (a lot), falling single and one who wasn’t plus having an exotic Sicilian chicken make her nest in your yard…  Yeah, there were some weird vibes in 17.

And yes, stories can generate new perspective. With awareness comes the challenge of remodel.
